For this family of six, their house couldn’t truly be a forever home until it had an accessible renovation makeover! Finding a home contractor to complete this type of work can be a challenge, as they often do not have either the production knowledge to build accessible features, or the design expertise to plan for them.
Challenges we faced designing this accessible living renovation
Even though we made home accessibility changes throughout the house, the major changes required were during their son’s bedroom and bathroom renovation. To reduce physical lifting from bed to bath, an overhead track system was installed to ensure the transfer process is safe and comfortable for child and caregiver.
Several other important aspects were tackled in this home renovation:
- Wheelchair entry from the garage required eliminating a closet and moving an entry way.
- The sunken living room was raised, with special attention paid to integration of the flooring with the brick fireplace hearth.
- Widening the hallways allows for an adult sized wheelchair as their son grows.
At Hammerdown Home Renovations, we’re experienced with renovations for accessibility. Our owner Tyson knew we could make the transformations needed to make this a dream home for the entire family!
