Six questions to ask before hiring a home renovation company

Your home is so much more than shelter from the storm – it’s a place of comfort, a place to create memories, and an investment in your future. So, when it comes to your home, you want to be sure you’re making the right choices.
Hiring a home renovation company for your next project is a big decision. If you’ve read our article, “How to hire a home renovation company in Winnipeg,” you are surely on the right track. But if you have no experience hiring a renovation company, and even if you do, you might be unsure of what questions to ask to ensure mutual fit.
Join me as I cover six questions you should ask before hiring a home renovation company. These questions will help you discover alignment, values, and fit between you and the renovation company, leading you to make the right decision for your renovation project.
Does your home renovation company offer interior design services in-house?
Yes, we do.
An in-house interior designer lets us work more quickly and closely than the “other” guys. We can collaborate on ideas and bounce options between the build and design teams, leading to a better outcome. Having our interior designer present from the beginning of your home renovation allows a far greater understanding of your needs, budget, and timeline than relaying the information second-hand to an external designer.
When it comes to planning and booking your renovation project, having our interior designer on staff also leads to these benefits:
Knowledge of the budget and your needs so we know where to suggest places to “splurge” and where to “save”
Preordering the products and materials we need to complete your job can lead to quicker turnaround times
Scheduling trades and other scopes of work, with our interior designer helping oversee the communication between teams
Creating an efficient timeline based on product availability and personnel resources, with the flexibility to adjust when needed
The primary focus of our interior design services is to ensure your home renovation is created in the style you want while ensuring we make the most of your budget and stick to your timeline.
How long has your home renovation company been in business, and what experience and training does your team have?
Hammerdown Home Renovations & General Construction Inc. has created beautiful spaces in our client’s homes since 2004. Much of our longevity is due to our shared beliefs with our clients—that their homes deserve the very best.
My dedication to my craft is showcased by the recognition through the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association as a “Certified Master Renovator.” However, while my business starts with me, it doesn’t end there.
I’m supported by a dream roster of talented and hardworking staff, starting with support from my wife, Kim, who is Hammerdown’s co-owner and office manager. Our team also includes:
Dean, our Production Manager with 15 years of home renovation experience
Adrian, our Estimator with 30 years in the construction industry
Stephane, our Lead Hand with 15 years of home renovation experience
Stefan, our Interior Designer
And numerous skilled tradespeople that we have tight-knit relationships
A team of this calibre with many different viewpoints and experiences is a strength – i.e., many other companies have a one- or two-person operation. We can ideate rapidly, helping to bring our clients’ dream homes to life before their eyes.
How does your home renovation company estimate, design, and plan projects?
For the first appointment, we will host you at our office. You’ll meet many of our team members, including our interior designer, at your interior design consultation appointment. We also:
Discuss the materials and finishes you prefer or would like to use
Cover your project’s potential timeline and budget estimates
After your initial consultation, we schedule your in-home consultation. At your in-home interior design consultation, we:
Conduct an in-depth review of all the materials and finishes for your home renovation
Guide you through a series of questions that will uncover your interior design style
Walk through your home’s footprint as we discuss the changes that need to occur to increase the functionality of your home
Take all measurements of the spaces we are designing in your home
After your in-home consultation, you’ll receive a contract for your home renovation project that includes all the details we discussed—products, materials, design choices, timeline, and budget. Once you commit, we start ordering products, planning trades and construction dates, and scheduling all parts of your home renovation.
But how can we plan projects so far in advance?
That comes down to our attention to detail, our belief in transparency with our clients, and our willingness to go the extra mile to ensure our home renovation estimates are thorough. We also use construction software that allows us to schedule all of our resources and jobs – with pinpoint accuracy months in advance – down to the hour!
Due to our detailed scheduling and planning abilities and other industry forecasting of material availability and costs, we never encounter a hiccup we can’t overcome.
What process do you follow for renovations?
Our home renovation process is centred and directed by you, the homeowner. We work for you and strive to ensure that your home’s future state will meet all your needs, both aesthetically and functionally.
We follow a four-phase process to complete home renovations. Each phase has been refined to create strong collaboration between you, us, and our various team members. The four phases are:
1. Consultation and interior design
We mentioned this in the question above, but we conduct two consultations, one in our showroom and a second at your home. We use the information we gather from these meetings to create your project’s quote and plan.
We supply you with full renderings of your home renovation, guide you through material selection and sample review, and update the budget as we approach the final drawings and specifications.
Once you’re ready to book your job and pay the deposit, we put your home renovation into our production schedule and it’s off to the races!
2. Construction
Your project manager will oversee every detail of your home renovation. They will be the liaison between you and our team, with daily check-ins until your project is complete. They also work closely with the designer to ensure each detail is perfect.
Our contractors look after every aspect of your home renovation, so you don’t have to lift a finger. We handle and manage everything from demolition, plumbing and electrical, drywall, flooring, lighting, cabinet installation, and custom tiling to permits, inspections, engineering, and finishing carpentry.
We minimize the mess in other parts of your home with exhaust fans, tarping, and daily job site clean-ups. Everything is done with care and superior craftsmanship as if it were our home.
3. Final walk-through
To prepare for your arrival in your refreshed space, we clean all construction debris and dust so it’s ready for you to enjoy. Once your home renovation is complete, our designer and team will walk you through the space, ensuring your satisfaction with everything.
4. Warranty
For all of our work, we offer a 2-year warranty, giving you absolute peace of mind.
Throughout each phase, multiple individuals from our team, often the designer, estimator, and production manager, will be involved in your project. Your project is double- and triple-checked, which is one of the reasons we can capture everything in your estimate. This makes for “rock solid” project quotes that avoid scope and budget creep.
It also helps that we have the right people in the right seats! We aren’t here to sell you things you don’t need—we are here to help you transform your home into a place you love. Because of our team’s collaborative quoting process and collective experience in the construction and renovation industry, we get your home renovation right the first time.
Each team member plays a valuable role in executing your renovation to the utmost quality and standards while maintaining efficiency and staying on budget.
How do past home renovation clients perceive your work?
Our clients love working with us as much as we love working with them! Hammerdown is built on mutual respect through trust, integrity, and shared values of wanting the best for our homes.
But you don’t need to take our word for it. Our clients are so delighted with their home renovations that they often take to Google, social media, or Reddit to rave about their positive experiences. Just take a look at our:
We proudly display our past home renovations on our website in the “Our Projects” section, our Space Redefined magazine, and our social media pages, such as Instagram.
Even before your home renovation begins, we want to guide you. We frequently post articles on our home renovation blog, written for homeowners like yourself, to help make sound decisions regarding home renovations. Some of our top content includes topics like:
Perhaps the strongest and most telling metric for any company in a highly competitive services industry (like home renovations in Winnipeg) is repeat and referral business rate. Nearly one of every two home renovations is a repeat or referral client.
Our repeat clients often come to us with a smaller, initial home renovation project, such as a bathroom renovation. After seeing us in action, they can’t wait to book a much larger renovation with us!
On the other hand, our referral client base usually stems from a neighbour, friend, or family member visiting a home where we’ve completed a kitchen or whole-home renovation. They ask, “Who did the work on your home?” to which our client simply replies, “Hammerdown!”
How does your home renovation company stay current with industry news and changes?
We live and breathe home renovations; to that extent, we are fully immersed in the industry. Some of the ways I help ensure our company’s knowledge is sharp and up-to-date:
In addition to my team’s collective renovation experience, I believe in investing in our team and continuing to upgrade our skills. Many of our team members receive training throughout the year for things like:
Material and product training, such as Schluter product training
Energy efficiency
Leadership training
Topics that showcase ways for our industry to get better
Building code regulations and changes
That brings us to the end of our list of questions. Do you still have a question for us? If so, please contact us, and we’ll happily answer it!
Ask these questions – and then decide which home renovation company to hire!
As demonstrated throughout this article, we have a fantastic track record with multiple repeat clients, highly detailed estimation, quoting, and renovation planning processes, a strong, integrated, in-house team and years of experience that you can trust to get your home renovation done confidently.
One of the top requests we receive from our clients is that they would love to gain more square footage without having to move or build an addition/extension onto their home. While we can’t necessarily increase your home’s square footage, we can design a layout that maximizes your existing square footage with a renovation.
At the beginning of the year, I often see home contracting companies offering advice on the latest trends in home renovations. While it’s important to be aware of trends in interior design and house remodelling, one shouldn’t get too caught up in the most recent trending product – as next year, it might be trending in the opposite direction.
Many Winnipeg homeowners who have received home renovation services from us in the past know that a Hammerdown renovation is an enjoyable, creative, collaborative process with transparency, skill, and integrity. We truly value our clients – you allow us to do what we love daily.
