Our clients loved their North Winnipeg home, which had been custom designed by the previous owner, an architect. The house had a lot of interesting features, but much of it was starting to become tired and outdated. The kitchen was in desperate need of an overhaul, and our clients, having retirement on the mind, wanted a kitchen that was contemporary, beautiful, and functional for their retirement years.

Listening to the client, understanding the use of the space, it became apparent that the kitchen was doing double duty – even triple duty! Cooking and baking were essential of course, but entertaining and working from home was just as important.

Our client wanted to be able to work from her kitchen, using her laptop, enjoying the views of her back yard. The design solution here was to build an oversized island with custom cabinetry that would allow the laptop and printer to be hidden. As well, a television and cable box were built in so so switching from work to leisure time was as easy as a flipping a switch. For entertaining, the beautiful quartz countertop provides four person seating and is open to the adjacent dining area. And the glass grey subway tile backsplash elevates the kitchen aesthetic.

Some variations on the typical kitchen design were implemented keeping our clients future selves in mind. The dishwasher for example was mounted in a cabinet much higher than usual, making it easier to load and unload without bending.

Our other favourite feature of this space is the unique vinyl flooring throughout, and a custom ceiling buildout above the dining table, set off with contemporary pendant lighting. Matching floating cabinets in the dining area tie the space together with the kitchen.

This was a great project that show how much you can do to increase functionality within a discreet space without sacrificing style.
