While every project feels special, this one was particularly so. Partly due to the client’s past experience of frustrating encounters with other contractors, but also because the house itself was in a cabin style with a loft design.

The client loved their home, and especially their location on a beautiful acreage near Bird’s Hill Park. They had horses, and were recently retired and wanted to have a kitchen that reflected their own outdoorsy style and delivered on specific functionality.

Tyson found the design challenge intriguing and spent a lot of time listening to understand how to problem solve the design issues so the couple could have the dream kitchen they always wanted. For instance, it became apparent that two sinks would be needed, one to fillet fish while the other could be used to prepare the rest of the dinner. Improved lighting was a priority as was a large island to entertain family and friends.

One of the unique elements of the kitchen was two windows set on the same wall of different sizes and heights. To solve the unbalanced feel, cabinet were strategically placed to divide the wall and a split level counter further divided the space. This retained the all important views, while upgrading the functionality of additional counter space.

This rustic kitchen design delivers on the client’s style preference while also adding modern touches that keep it current for today’s conveniences. Additional features include:

  • Distressed hardwood, adding character and durability.
  • The cabinets are made of solid hickory with ‘soft-close’ drawer and doors.
  • A custom-designed knife drawer safely houses the all important filleting knives.
  • Custom drawers were designed with built-in spice racks.
  • Accent lighting to ensures a bright and shadow-free work space.
  • The pillars were left exposed, honouring the unique cabin feel of this home.
  • An under mount sink and granite counters added a touch of upscale elegance.

The project was very fulfilling and the clients were thrilled. They had a dream kitchen now in which they could enjoy their retirement, and envision many future fishing trips and family gatherings.

The built-in storage tower in the custom made vanity, and the tile shower/tub (was my favourite part of the overall renovation).

It was a pleasure to work with Hammerdown. The crew was skilled, experienced and always available to answer questions. The quality of the workmanship is excellent. Tyson is accessible and responsive. The assistance in directing to quality products was greatly appreciated.
